It has a quiet, well-finished interior, a smooth V6, and an available third-row seat. For those whose driving takes them off the beaten path, the 4Runner is an off-road champ. In our tests the hybrid got 26 mpg, which is very impressive for an SUV. The RX is a relaxed cruiser and has proved to deliver an almost headache-free ownership experience. Look for a model with the optional EyeSight suite of advanced safety systems. This generation of the Crosstrek is quiet, has a smooth ride, and got 29 mpg overall in our tests. It gets loud and has a stiff ride, but will put a smile on your face when you drive it on curvy roads. This roadster feels light and quick, is frugal with fuel, and is fun to drive at slow and fast speeds. Multiple active safety systems were available. The hybrid version got a terrific 36 mpg overall. The Avalon is stylish and engaging to drive, though the 2016 has the better ride quality. The Tacoma is rough and utilitarian, but it’s a dependable truck that holds its value. The redesigned 2014 model lost the cushy ride and plush interior of the previous generation, but fuel economy improved to 20 mpg overall. The three-row Highlander has a quiet interior, room for seven, straightforward controls, and top-notch reliability.
The HR-V provides great fuel economy, and its flexible seating and cargo spaces carry family, gear, or both. The Q3 is quiet, has a refined ride, and its well-finished interior has comfortable seats and a high feature content. The Sienna delivers a comfortable ride, a flexible interior, and the FWD version got 20 mpg overall the AWD one gets 19 mpg. It’s comfortable and quiet, and the hybrid got 36 mpg overall. The Lexus ES is a luxury version of the Toyota Camry. We got 27 mpg overall with the four-cylinder.

The TLX has a quiet cabin, came nicely equipped, and was available with a manual gearbox in V6 models. Its quick steering contributes to its agility, and we got a class-leading 32 mpg overall from the 2017 model that we tested. The 6 is one of the sportiest midsized sedans. But the ride is stiff and the cabin gets loud. The RAV4 is roomy and versatile, has nimble handling, and gets a good 24 mpg in the AWD version. Look for a version with the 2.5-liter engine, which gets 25 mpg. Mazda’s small SUV has taut, agile handling and well-weighted steering, although the ride is choppy and the cabin gets loud. SUV, the Venza has a quiet interior, a roomy rear seat, and a generous cargo area. The MKZ’s ride and handling rivals European sports sedans, while the hybrid version got 34 mpg overall in our tests. The Camry Hybrid delivered an impressive 38 mpg overall in our tests, and has a quiet interior and comfortable ride. The Accord is a roomy and comfortable sedan that got 30 mpg overall in our tests with the four-cylinder engine the V6 got 26.
